Soaring is piece of public art that is a huge asset to the community. With the guidance of respected local artist, Jim Connor, and the work of Southern Indiana Veterans, Elder Heart, which is now Mission 22, created this art piece for the purpose of healing the community and Veterans through the experience of creating art.
The swirling leaves represent fall leaves, driven skyward by a sudden wind. These leaves are not only an iconic symbol of Brown County, but also represent Arts Village Brown County and Mission 22 rising together, bonded by community to reach their dreams.
Elder Heart, now Mission 22, is a Veteran organization that does community projects as well as public, private, and corporate art to raise awareness for the 22 Veteran suicides that occur every day, hence the 22 leaves in the Soaring sculpture. Their purpose is to employ and empower Veterans while raising this awareness.
After seeing the sculpture, stop by the Visitor’s Center for Soaring souvenirs or purchase online. Portion of all Soaring souvenirs go to Mission 22.
