The Brown County Art Gallery Collectors Showcase

“The House of the Singing Winds; en Homage”

Works by Charles Warren Mundy, Rita Spalding and T.C. Steele will be represented in 90 paintings celebrating the place where it happened, the T.C. Steele State Historic Site. The exhibit includes 12 original Steeles on loan from collectors and a major body of work by C.W. and Rita that was three years in the making. The premise? Paint the structures and the gardens when T.C. and Selma were at their zenith of success, the early 1920s. Through all seasons, these two artists were given access to the historic site by the Indiana State Museum. Rita became the first artist allowed to paint inside the house since Steele’s passing in 1926 spending days absorbing the atmosphere, their spirit and even listening to their music. C.W. Mundy explored the exteriors and the gardens through summer, spring and fall and an 8-inch snowstorm.

The result is a collection of their work that is being offered for sale. Part of the proceeds benefit the Brown County Art Gallery Foundation and kicks off a year of centennial celebration.

“Selma and the Painter” by Lyn Letsinger-Miller stars Broadway actress Jill Tasker as Selma. This one-woman show is one act in three scenes and gives Selma a voice in the story that led to the couple’s art sanctuary, one that continues to this day thanks to her determination and love for her husband. It’s the love story that led to the Brown County we know today.
