Halloween in the Hills

Brown County State Park celebrate Halloween on October 19th this year!

Pumpkin Carving Contest: Bring your carved pumpkin to the Brown County State Nature Center by 4pm on Saturday, October 19th. Enter your pumpkin into one of our categories: under 10, 10 to 17,18+, or family. The top three entires for each category will earn a prize! Please submit your pumpkin with a cell phone number and your campsite number (if applicable) so we can contact you for your prize. Pumpkins with be on display at the Trick of Treat hike in the evening.

Campsite Decorating Contest: Register for our campsite decorating contest at the campground booth as you check in to your campsite. Decorate your site to your liking, but do not put nails in trees or park equipment, dig holes, or paint anything in the park. Judges will tour the campground after dark on October 19th to judge register sites. Prizes will be delivered to winning campsites after judging is completed. Please make sure you take everything home with you and your site clean and suitable for the next campers.

Trick or Treat Hike: Come to the park office and walk the Friends’ Trail for a trick or treat experience! The hike features interpretive stops, trick or treat tables provided by the Friends of Brown County State Park, and a photo opportunity with Smokey the Bear! The hike will be open from 6pm to 8pm, and is stroller and wheelchair friendly. The Friends’ Trail is a quarter mile of paved sidewalk. Bring a flashlight of headlamp!

Candlelight Hike: Come to the park office and take a hike down Trail 10 to the Peachtree Shelter. The naturalist will have a fire in the historic fireplace. Bring a flashlight or headlamp, or take your time and enjoy the candles to the path. The trail will be open from 8:30 to 10pm.

6pm - 9pm
Park After Dark Halloween Hike
After the sun goes down, the park comes to life. Explore our exciting new trail full of candy stops, interpretive stations, and more! Hike the trail anytime between 6pm and 9pm. The hike starts at the Nature Center, but we ask campers remain parked at their campsites and walk to the trail access at the beginning of Taylor Ridge Campground. This trail is great for all ages and is stroller friendly. Bring a headlamp or flashlight for a complete experience.
1pm - 2:30
Live Raptor Show
Join the Indiana Raptor Center for a presentation with live birds of prey! Learn about owls and their role in Indiana's woods, and take close looks at these animals often associated with Halloween!
1pm - 3pm
Halloween Arts and Crafts
Come to the Nature Center between 1pm and 3pm for arts and crafts. We will focus on the fall season at Brown County State Park, including animal masks!
Before 4pm
Pumpkin Carving Contest
Bring your carved pumpkin to the Brown County State Park Nature Center by 4pm on Saturday, October 21st. Pumpkins will be judged and placed on our Park After Dark Halloween Hiking Trail. Carving must be done on your own, please bring your own tools and pumpkin! You may pick up your judged pumpkin and any earned prizes at the Nature Center on Sunday, October 22nd.
