Brown County is the perfect spot to start paddling! Whether it’s a kayak or a paddle board we’ve put together a few tips to give beginners the push they need to start paddling to success!

Kayaking for Beginners Tips

1. Make sure you have the right gear

Not only is this a safety matter, but it will also just make your life much easier. If you don’t want to spend the money on buying equipment there are plenty of places to rent!

2. Prepare to get wet

It’s most likely, at some point, you will get wet. Whether it’s from an accidental cap size or water coming off your paddle. Make sure you have the proper attire and maybe an extra set of clothes to change into once you’re finished

3. Practice basic paddling strokes

This is where it’s best to go kayak the first few times with friends who know what they’re doing or a guide. While learning to paddle a kayak is not rocket science it is a lot easier when you learn how to do it correctly!

4. Go with someone

The first couple times you’re on the water can be overwhelming. To put yourself at ease ask a friend to go, or get in touch with a professional like Pathfinders Outfitters.

5. Ask questions

Never be afraid to ask questions. Especially if you’re on a guided tour. That’s what the pro’s are for!

Paddle Boarding for Beginners Tips

Paddle Board with life vest

1. Use a leash

This goes for all stand up paddle boarders. Using a leash is vital in any kind of condition and only keeps you and those you’re paddling with safer. There are different types of leashes and attachment points depending on what style of paddling you’re doing. In Brown County we have rentals for you and professionals waiting to help figure out what style is right for your trip.

2. Make sure your paddle (and you) are facing the right way

We know what you’re thinking… duh? But it can be challenging, especially to newcomers! Essentially, make sure your fins are in the back.

3. Go with a friend or guide your first couple times

New hobbies can be fun, but getting started can sometimes be stressful! To ease some of that uncertainty bring a friend or hit up one of our professionals like Simply Fitness.

4. Look after your board

Paddle Boards for beginners are big! They’re built with lightweight materials making them pretty expensive. Make sure you are careful when loading it and unloading it, especially while on land.

5. Ask questions

Don’t forget – everyone was a beginner at some point. Don’t be afraid to ask you guide questions. That’s what they’re there for!
