Brown County Art Colony Weekend 2026

Immerse yourself in Brown County’s creative spirit during Art Colony Weekend, September 11–13, 2026. This three-day celebration invites art enthusiasts of all ages to explore the history, artists and natural beauty that helped establish Brown County as one of America’s most celebrated art colonies.

Tour Nashville’s galleries, admire historic and contemporary works, watch artists paint outdoors, contribute to a community masterpiece and discover a special piece to take home during the Brown County Art Colony Auction.

Friday, September 11

Founders Exhibition: Frederick W. Rigley
11 a.m.–7 p.m. | Brown County Art Guild

View a rare collection honoring founding artist Frederick W. Rigley and his appreciation for the landscapes, light and character of southern Indiana.

Gallery Hop
5–7 p.m. | Downtown Nashville

Tour participating galleries throughout the village while enjoying live painting, music, refreshments and artwork available for purchase.

Saturday, September 12

Great Outdoor Art Contest
7 a.m.–4 p.m. | T.C. Steele State Historic Site

Indiana’s oldest plein-air painting competition celebrates its 38th year. Watch artists work throughout the day, followed by judging at 2 p.m. and award announcements beginning at 3:30 p.m. A separate site admission fee applies.

Community Paint Together
Noon–4 p.m. | Village Green at Main and Jefferson Streets

Artists of every age and experience level are invited to help create a collaborative community masterpiece. Families are welcome.

Brown County Art Gallery
10 a.m.–5 p.m. | One Artist Drive

Explore “Theodore Clement Steele: Indiana’s Master Impressionist from Munich to Brown County.” At 2 p.m., enjoy a live performance of “Selma and the Painter,” featuring Broadway actress Jill Tasker as Selma Steele. Seating is limited.

Art Colony Auction Preview
10 a.m.–1 p.m. | Brown County Inn

Preview the artwork that will be featured in Sunday’s Brown County Art Colony Auction.

Guild Speaker Series: Rick Kelley
1–2:30 p.m. | Brown County Inn

Brown County historian Rick Kelley shares stories and insights about the artists, places and events that shaped the Brown County Art Colony. A question-and-answer session will follow.

Experience a lively afternoon of bidding featuring historic works by Midwest Art Colony artists alongside pieces from award-winning contemporary artists.
